Saying that Jay Z had a good year is an understatement. In 2013 he was executive producer of NBA 2K13; he diversified his portfolio by launching the Roc Nation Sports management agency; his wife dropped an album, which almost broke the internet; he dropped his 12th album, Magna Carta/Holy Grail, to critical acclaim; and he finally got the “-” dropped out of his name, now going officially by Jay Z… Because we all have to grow up some day.
Sean Carter’s many victories in 2013 did not, however, dissuade British artist Ali Graham from imagining the many problems he may have had, as inspired of course by the Jay Z track 99 Problems. Starting in June of 2013 he began illustrating these hypothetical problems, basing them mostly on lyrics from other Jay Z’s songs, aspects of his life, pop culture and eventually a few seasonal editions for Movember and Christmas.
As another year begins, let’s look back at the 99 Problems Jay Z had in 2013, thanks to one of our favourite Tumblr blogs this year.
