One of the most incredible things about Drake’s ascent to success is the sheer volume of music he’s made in such a short career. In addition to his 3 studio albums and critically acclaimed mixtape, Drake and producer 40 have made a lot of music just for the hell of it, and released a lot of it to the internet.
Here are 5 fantastic Drake tracks that were never included on any album:
1. 5AM in Toronto
This is an excellent example of “Hardstyle Drake.”
This track was released in anticipation of Drake’s lastest album Nothing Was the Same. It was the first real taste of Drake shying away from the R&B style of songs, and move into a more aggressive, angry style of rap.
An absolutely stellar song, that in my opinion, should have been included on the album.
Classic line – “If I like her, I just fly her to the city I’m in”
2. Club Paradise
This smooth track displayed classic production from 40. The track was released online around the time of the Grammy Winning album Take Care. Although it never received any commercial play, this song was influential enough for Drake to name his album tour “Club Paradise.”
Classic Line – “When all is said and done, more is always said than done”
3. Fall For Your Type
This slow love balled was intended to be the opener on Drake’s debut album Thank Me Later. Unfortunately, the record label was unable to get sample clearance in time for release and the track was cut.
Drake ended up giving the song to Jamie Foxx, but stayed on to sing the hook. Still, the original somehow made it’s way online and it is old-school Drake all over.
4. Enough Said featuring Aaliyah
This emotionally heavy single was commercially released, receiving radio play until it was pulled due to the surrounding controversy. What gives?
Aaliyah, who tragically died in 2001, apparently had a wealth of unfinished recordings. 40 and Drake were able to finish this track with an understated beat that created a melancholy tone.
After the track was released it was confirmed that Drake and 40 were involved in creating an entire album with Aaliyah’s unfinished recordings. This caused serious backlash, mostly from Timberland and Missy Elliot, long-time friends and collaborators of Aaliyah’s. Even Aaliyah’s mom came out against the project, saying the album was a bad idea.
After the backlash, Drake and 40 walked away from the project and the album was shelved. If this song is any indication, it would have been a hell of a listen.
Classic Line – “Every million I gain an enemy or a cousin”
5. Dreams Money Can Buy
This was another online pre-release for Take Care. Although it was supposed to be a bonus track, it never made the final cut.
