I was initially super stoked to share this story, but it’s unfortunately devolved into a less awesome “real or fake” fiasco. When these images first hit the web they were released with the story of Pakistani native, Veena Malik, and here politically charged nude photo shoot for FHM India (I didn’t know they had one either). What made this story especially intriguing was that Veena Malik (website) had the letters “ISI” added to the image across her arm, which is only significant because those letters are the acronym for “Inter-Services Intelligence” better known as Pakistan’s Secret Service. Given the ongoing unrest between Pakistan and India, this gesture was meant as an act to poke fun at the ISI, who is said to be responsible for any civil disruptions in India, and who would be the angriest at a nude shoot of one of their nationals.
So this was an awesome story about empowerment, freedom of speech and social activism until it later came out that Veena didn’t pose nude for the images released above, and didn’t see the images until they were published. She maintains that while she did shoot for FHM India, that she wasn’t sent these photos, and she posed wearing very little, but never nude. FHM India’s editor, Kabeer Sharma, maintains of course that she did pose nude, and has the behind the scenes footage to prove it, as well as e-mail confirmation from Veena. I think that he’s probably telling the truth, and that Veena is denying his claim now that the shots are out and she’s facing a major backlash from Pakistani critics, and even her father who is calling for legal action against her. There’s even an “I Hate Veena Malik” fanpage that’s over 14k fans strong- Haters Gonna Hate.
Nude or not, I think is a non-issue, as FHM doesn’t really publish any nudity to begin with (no nipples etc) and the images published don’t show any more than they would if she were fully clothed. I think that if Veena took the pics, that she should just stick to her guns and stop muddying what could be an awesome moment with unnecessary doubt. The statement has been made, and people will either be inspired or angered by the result. Veena has publicly criticized Pakistani clerics before, and posed in racy shoots previous to this, so the controversy is nothing new. Veena has even gone so far as to file for lawsuit against FHM India. One might question whether or not her denial of the shoot is the result of actual ISI threats. Crazier things have happened.
