The Rant: F@%k The LTC Strike!

Straight up, I’m pissed. I tried to come up with something clever to open this column with, but the constant use of the ‘backspace’ button only pissed me off more. My bitterness comes from many a source, but most recently the LTC strike. As a student, London local, and a fucking human being, I rely on public transportation to get me to school, work, and sometimes social gatherings when I don’t feel like spending over $20 on cab. Fuck that. The strike only started a few days ago, but I already feel like London has turned into a ghost town. Maybe it’s because I haven’t really been outside during high traffic hours, but I bet the other bus riders are sitting at home plotting a mass homicide on all drivers of the LTC.
If I’m not correct, I believe the drivers are striking for higher hourly wages and more benefits. Might I just add that they are asking for the same benefits as firefighters and police officers? I’m sorry, but you assholes don’t risk your lives every day driving a bus. The thing is basically an armoured tank and doesn’t go over 50. You don’t have to worry about getting shot, you may suffer carpal tunnel, but unless Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock are aboard your bus and it gets high jacked, I’m going to go ahead and say you’ll live a long, and likely uneventful life. Did I fail to mention the months paid vacation that are to be awarded these people… for driving a bus? I don’t mean to look down on this most noble of occupations, a job is a job, but you don’t need to run off to Hawaii because of a crying baby, or because some bum won’t stop talking to you while you’re rolling down Dundas. Fuck, life is so hard sitting on your ass sometimes.
If they win this, LTC drivers will be the highest paid public transportation community in all of Canada. I’m pretty sure they have been asking for bathroom breaks along the way too. For those who don’t know much about the bus system (other than knowing the 6 Richmond gets you from your apartment at 675, to school and back) the bus drivers are only allowed breaks if they are ahead of schedule. To someone who rides the bus a greater distance than 5 minutes up the street, ’cause they’re too fucking lazy to walk anyway, you’ll notice drivers who stop and support their tobacco and coffee cravings almost every 3rd stop. Here’s and even worse example: The lady driving the 10 Wonderland is a cold-hearted-Mormon-bitch. Picture Little House on The Prairie meets Carrie. With her wispy fucking hair tossed in a bun, and her quadrafocal glasses, this Nazi driver gets to her stop at Westmount Mall 10 minutes (at least) prior to departure time everyday, and rather than let all the poor freezing bystanders (assuming it’s winter time) on the bus until she leaves, she sits and fucking knits to her heart’s content until it’s time to go. If you’re going to sit on the fucking bus and leave the rest of us outside, at least knit everyone else a god damn sweater! Jesus.
It still baffles me how complaining over driving a set route that is given to you every day is justifiable. I get that driving the same way over and over is extremely repetitive and annoying, but It’s not like the director gives you a route through fucking Narnia and back and asks you to fend for yourself… although thinking about it now, I’d take a bus ride to a mystical land before class any day. In my opinion, the drivers are being pretty selfish right now. Okay, you want more money? How about all the people who depend on the bus to get to work to make money themselves? Not everyone can just carpool as easy as you might think, and not everyone can afford alternative transportation. Maybe if the government released their teleportation technology to the masses we wouldn’t need buses in the first place, and you LTC-tards wouldn’t have to piss and moan about not being paid enough… but I’m sorry the world doesn’t work in everyone’s fucking favour, so shut up and drive!
I think the least that can be done is a refund on our bus passes. I’m not talking for the entire year, but for the time the LTC decides to be little bitches about this situation. That way, any money we get back, we can use to fund ways to get around and live our lives as students. But let’s be serious, we know we’ll end up spending it Western’s favourite pass time: chugging beer and having sex.
I guess we can thank the LTC for the workout we’ll be getting now that we have to walk everywhere. So thank you London Transit. My legs have never looked better… Yeah… Suck it!
I leave you with a song, from Rihanna to the LTC. With Love,
Rima Hater
Chug a beer, have fun riding the shuttle bus from Oxford and Richmond.

“LTC-Tards” <- I'm so stealing that.
Great rant.
on the plus side, all the girls walking to campus will have amazing legs…
I totally agree with you. The best part is that they want to be paid like city workers but don’t want to be mandated by the city. The shitty job that the university is doing to manage this is only compounding the problem. They have a shuttle service going that is goin to target the students by the picketers, thy have a carpooling service that should be renamed RTC ( Rape Transit Commission), yet they won’t give students breaks on the Already exorbitant parking fees. I live in south London and there is no fucking way I am making a two hour walk to campus past Richmond and dundas especially at night and I certainly can’t afford a $20 cab ride eah way. I am shocked that instead of mannng up and helping the students who pay out of the ass for tuition the university is looking at this as a money making venture. They should take a look at how fanshaw is handling this, making more parking available to students and doing it for free.
Fanshawe does something awesome? Will wonders never cease?
That was unbelievably ignorant.
Not only did you present very few facts but you managed to slander an entire group of individuals for exercising their rights and you even found some space to fit in some death threats.
Well done.
How dare these public servants request bathroom breaks! They are here to serve us, they should put aside their worries because after-all they are here to serve us, the all mighty UWO students.
Seriously the sense of entitlement at this school is frightening. Anyone who thinks that they are better than another person because they attend UWO or have money seriously needs to re-evaluate their life.
Before this strike began I was astonished to watch a student verbally abuse a bus driver for the proposed strike to the cheers of other students.
Walk a day in their shoes.
Don’t think it’s stressful? Next time a bus is a few minutes late (probably because it was stuck in traffic – beyond the drivers control) watch how people treat the drivers.
Learn the facts, learn to look at both sides of an argument and maybe do a little growing up.
hahahah so funny.. seriously F the LTC!!! I don’t understand how people driving a bus think they deserve all of these benefits and money ughhh
Love. Dave, I love you.
I’ll let others respond in detail, but I’d like to address this here, and I’ll probably have to address it on this site a million other times in the weeks/months/years to come…
This was a RANT! As are many ‘articles’ published on this website. It even says so in the title. There is a link to the LFP article from a few days ago if you want to stick to the ‘on the record’ facts. This however, was a student/London local voicing their opinion. Not the typical UWO student. Also, it was not the allowance for bathroom breaks that this student voiced and opinion against, but the ABUSE of such privileges.
In a addition it would also appear that the bulk of her complaint lies with the University itself. Which brings me to my final question and with this I say again- I love you…
But did you actually read this article, or just read the title, skim for ammunition, and write a comment?
NateBlack,
I find this website very humorous and interesting, I frequent it and I can respect opinions different from mine. I wasn’t responding necessarily just to the rant, but on students opinions on the strike in general. My comment may have been a bit over the top considering this was an opinion piece, I just feel like many students echo these words without taking a chance to think for themselves.
I’m a proud second-year UWO student and I realize that you cannot generalize all of Western into one stereotype, just as you cannot generalize all LTC bus drivers into one stereotype. Does ONE bus driver misusing their breaks give us the right to verbally abuse ALL bus drivers because they happen to be late?
After reading the article a second time, I still feel that the vast majority of the rant was slandering the bus drivers followed by a short recap of what the University should do in the last paragraph but hey its an opinion piece and I can respect that.
I couldn’t be bothered to start a flame war which I’m sure will follow (with other posters) I just wanted to get my opinion out there so readers can maybe take a chance to step back and think before threatening the striking bus drivers.
As the author: Think whatever you want. No offense taken at all. Part of this was in good fun, BUT most of it is because I am sincerely upset about the strike. However, it is nice to see other people’s opinions on the topic, whether mine was voiced aggressively or not, everyone deserves a say which can only lead to the buses running and everyone being happy again!
Oh and just a PS: to Dave…
ignoRANT.. hardy har
Dave.
I have a greater degree of appreciation for your second comment than I did your first. At the end of the day a strike is a strike. Which is a vague way of saying “It’s going to suck for everybody and at the end of the day we’re still all screwed.”
I’m glad we could agree to disagree before the others got to this. lol. Cooler heads will prevail.
Great commentary on the Bus Strike. Any update though on what’s happening? Cab drivers are saying this is going to last until February. It’s just ridiculous. I’ve had to sit in more traffic over the last three days then over the last three years here in London. When will the city order them back to work? Can they? Furthermore, as students, where’s our compensation? Something like 8 million dollars goes to the bus pass program every year (Don’t quote me on that, but I do know that its some absurd number). We should be receiving a credit for our pass!
Publishing an opinion from a self-centered, spoiled brat like Rima will just emphasize her belief that her POV is warranted. The strike is definitely inconvenient, but in no way does it justify this kind of childish outburst.
Fuck you, Rima, and fuck everyone else who thinks like you.
“The lady driving the 10 Wonderland is a cold-hearted-Mormon-bitch. Picture Little House on The Prairie meets Carrie. With her wispy fucking hair tossed in a bun, and her quadrafocal glasses, this Nazi driver gets to her stop at Westmount Mall 10 minutes (at least) prior to departure time everyday.”
TOOOOOOOO Sick!
I agree with you. This strike is pathetic and I don’t know how those bus drivers can actually stand outside the LTC and protest for money knowing how many people they are screwing out of money.
We should be getting our money back AND free parking!!!
Don’t we pay less than $20/month for our USC bus pass? Because that would get me to campus and back home by cab…once…
Couldn’t give a fuck about having my bus pass reimbursed, and free parking only benefits students with cars. Get me a fucking way to class.
the unions might be good for the people who are in the unions but it doesn’t do a thing for the people who are unemployed. Because the union keeps down the number of jobs, it doesn’t do a thing for them.
fuckers just want more money for themselves
Does anyone know how much the transit workers currently make?
Dave,
The LTC employees ought to be happy they have jobs at all in our current economic climate, as there are many people out there who do not. Of course they have rights and do not deserve to be berated and abused by their riders. Of course they should be allowed to express their desires for a better working environment. However, withdrawing a vital public service is not going to win much sympathy from the public, and doing so in a recession is a guaranteed way to piss a whole lot of people off.
The level of abuse they are going to take from the public is only going to increase as people grow wary of what they perceive to be a whole lot of bitching and moaning by a bunch of fat, lazy, uneducated, and ungrateful workers. The LTC union is trying to launch a PR campaign to get the public on their side, but it’s just not going to happen.
Anyway, you are quite welcome to go ahead and spout off the socialist BS your 2nd year Political Science professor fed you, and masturbate to your pictures of Jack Layton. In the meantime, if people want to express anger over the strike, they’re quite entitled to do so as well.
they are currently making just over $23 an hour. I’m sure being a bus driver has its ups and downs, but I’m also sure making less than half of what they make at my shitty, degrading part-time job is just as hard as driving a bus. If I can suck it up at my job and pay over $6,000 a year for tuition, they can suck it up, take their month’s vacation and suck it. in a time of recession, take what you can get.

We do get compensation… kind of…

I’m definitely not condoning how certain people treat the bus drivers, and I’ve never personally witnessed someone being blatantly rude to any bus driver.. But I genuinely feel bad for the people who rely on the bus to get to work to provide for their families.. And also the 30,000 students that attend Western and rely on the bus as well. Not trying to sound “elitist”, but honestly the bus drivers can’t expect to have all of these benefits and money when they drive a bus for a living!! As stated in the article, a job is a job, but people are busting their asses in school so they aren’t stuck driving a bus around London!!
As a “mature” student who’s lived in London for more than 6yrs, I can say with quite exuberance Fuck the LTC. But not just because of the strike, but due to their general shitastic service in general.
They are often late, unapologetic about it and if you call up LTC to get an explanation as to why you’re running 10min behind and your bus driver still stopped for a smoke and a coffee all you ever get is “we’re in a union”. Or more then a year ago, when a co-workers wife was 7months pregnant and kicked off half way through the loop to walk 20minutes home because said bus driver didn’t want to work over time.
LTC is $2.75 a ride, the same price as Toronto and yet we get none of the same quality of service. The LTC is a joke.
It’s not the strike per say that people are angry over, it’s the way the opportunistic union whores went about crippling a city during an extremely sensitive time of year. Not just for students, but for families who rely on the bus to get them to work. Work, that helps them pay for their family, as well as Christmas which is coming up fast.
It’s also the fact that these union whores are asking for equality benefits/compensation to say police officers and firefighters. They do not offer the same service. They’re just greedy bastards. It’s hard for people who make minimum wage or slightly higher to sympathize with their plight, especially since they’re making life hell for a lot of people.
So I agree, fuck the LTC.
I had to quit my job today because of this strike. It’s hard enough to find a job, and considering how good of a job I was able to find, and I’m being forced to quit it because I have to bike an hour to get there from my place, it’s supposed to rain for 3 days straight here, I don’t really want to get sick.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been forced to quit work, or what they do for a living. I applaud the students for doing a shuttle service. I do, but I wish there was something as convenient as that for the rest of us who don’t go to school but do go to work.
If they think they’re not getting enough respect from people before hand, they’re not going to help the attitudes of people when they do get back to work. They’re only making it worse on themselves because people are going to abuse them worse this time around. And they deserve it. People need buses, and they can’t get around without them. Besides, all you need is a drivers license and a Grade 12 education to be a bus driver. That’s more than what most students make after finishing college/university.
First, I just want to say I’m not commenting on the actions of either the LTC or the drivers’ union. It’s a crappy situation that everyone’s dealing with and while it sucks, I have a bigger problem with the whole thing.
What I have a problem with is how the school’s (Western and Fanshawe) have decided to handle the situation. As I’ve read through these rants, UWO parking prices are incredibly high, which makes the situation even more difficult for students who are generally struggling financially this time of year anyway. At Fanshawe, they’re not giving students a break either, not to mention they have limited parking space available for students in the first place.
As a student, it’s easy to focus primarily on the impact this strike is having on students. Personally, I’m fortunate enough to have a car and am able to get the places I need to go. But I’ve been finding it’s hard to justify spending the money it takes to park on campus unless I NEED to be in class. I agree with the earlier post that it’s disgusting that the school’s are profiting off of this unfortunate event in the city. I have enough issues with Fanshawe College, this just further adds to my list.
I have been a victim of bus drivers treating students terribly. This one driver (2C route) in particular was driving so aggressively (with a packed bus) that students near the front fell down… TWICE! We were in traffic and he was full throttle to locking up the tires all within a span of 1 second, we moved maybe 15 feet. I verbally displayed my dislike for his actions (WHAT THE FUCK DRIVER! SLOW IT DOWN), many others around me agreed. Does he not understand that ramming his way through traffic is not going to get him anywhere faster? Just nudge along like everybody else. And then I hear of the drivers complaining about the brakes on the buses! hahahaha, blame buddy on the 2C route. Fuck LTC!
I am not sure if this is true, but I heard that the drivers are upset that they are being paid less than drivers in cities such as Kitchener who have 2/3 (?) London’s population, etc…
I also *heard* that some of the people RUNNING the LTC (i.e. not driving buses) make over 100 000 and have given themselves more than 30% raises in the last few (I’m not sure how many) years. I think if I was a driver those things would piss me off.
But I’m not a driver, I’m a student who has thus far spent $50 on taxis and that pisses me off more.
That said, is there anything that we can do besides bitch to fix the situation?
If they are making 23 bucks an hour, they should shut the fuck up. If other drivers are making more in other areas, they are overpaid. It is easy as fuck to drive a bus. I have heard people say they deserve a pay raise.
Does a unionized worker doing an easy, unskilled job deserve more money than a non-unionized worker doing a similarly easy, unskilled job?
i must admit, the roads are SO MUCH CLEARER now. no traffic jams. no slow moving traffic. the lanes accelerate so much faster now!
p.s. and i get to ride hawt bitches home
Any buss driver in this day and age should be more than happy to be making $23/hour. Cab drivers make half that. I guess all that gas pedal pushing and braking is stressing them out. LTC employees are trying to make the argument that “well ticket prices have gone up, so should our wages”. I’d like to point out that gas prices have gone up tenfold in the last few years. That’s why ticket prices have gone up. The only reason services like the LTC might get away with this is because it’s a service that people depend on. Teachers get away with this time and time again.
Fuck the LTC
hmm. I get this is a rant, but at least a little research would have made you seem at least a little informed. How can you have such a strong opinion when you don’t take any time to really find out what is going on?
By the way, we are getting money back from the LTC for the bus passes. But the usc is keeping it.. so careful where you point your finger.
research is done, hence the link in the article
The only people complaining are those who depend on the LTC for a lift to school.
Shit I’d complain too. I depended heavily on the LTC last year. I took the 10 wonder everyday when I could have walked to class in about 10 minutes. Sorry for those of you who chose to live so far.
Rage on gentlemen.
Not true, D-Lo. I drive to school everyday, but I’m still complaining. The LTC are a bunch of whiners who should be happy they have jobs in our economic climate.
This is a pretty ignorant post. For the most part, the drivers do not want to be on strike. Maybe your time would be better spent ranting about union reps and how unions take advantage of the system. Do you really think the drivers want to be on struck right before Christmas? I’ve watched drivers put up with a lot of crap.
This strike has reminded me not to take for granted the public transportation system.
