If you followed TheCoach during the 2009-10 football season, you know just as well as I do how much effort was put in through out the year. For 22 weeks and over 260 games, I typed out an in depth preview with a ton of analysis and… in summary, it burnt me out.
This year, I’m back, I’ve done my homework and will continue to bust my ass all season long to give you the best predictions possible. But I’ve decided to make things easier on the both of us. Less typing = Less reading. Everything will be summed up in a sentence or two explaining why a team will win (with the score predicted as well).
It will be called ‘TheCoach’s Quick Picks’, and will help determine whether a team will cover the spread.
Also this year, Lion’s Den U’s other sports writer Malcolm will be going head-to-head against TheCoach
picking straight up winners. As a reader and fan, you couldn’t ask for a better 2nd opinion and if anyone is going to take TheCoach down, you can bet your ass that Malcolm has what it takes.
TheCoach’s WEEK 1 QUICK PICKS
MINNESOTA VIKINGS @ NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Brett Favre is the reason Minnesota was so good last year. He’s coming off ankle surgery and barely playing in the pre-season so expect him to be a little rusty early on. On the other side of the field, the Saints will be focused on receiving their SuperBowl Rings prior to the game and may suffer from a SuperBowl hangover. Saints win a battle mainly due to their incredible crowd.
Saints 24 Vikings 21
CLEVELAND BROWNS @ TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Both teams suck and I am kind of surprised Tampa Bay is favoured because Jake Delhomme should be the difference maker. Question is will be the reason the Browns win or the sole reason they lose (fumbles and interceptions)
Browns 23 Buccaneers 17
MIAMI DOLPHINS @ BUFFALO BILLS
Miami hasn’t won in Buffalo since 2004… expect that to change. The Bills are officially the laughing stock of the NFL and most analysts and websites have the Bills selecting first in next years draft… ahead of the Lions, Browns, Raiders and Bucs. Yes, Buffalo IS that bad.
Dolphins 24 Bills 10
CINCINNATI BENGALS @ NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Brady will have a bounce-back season with a healthy Welker. One thing that is certain is that New England and Bill Belichick play their best football when people start doubting them and with everyone jumping on the Jets bandwagon in 2010, expect great defensive schemes and classic Brady all season long. As for Ocho Cinco and T.O., I’ll believe it when I see it… is VH1 covering the game?
Patriots 27 Bengals 20
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS @ HOUSTON TEXANS
The Colts are the most consistent team in the sport and after losing the Superbowl last year, expect them to bounce back with a early win. Houston always tends to give them more of a battle than expected… but Peyton usually pulls it off.
Colts 24 Texans 20
DENVER BRONCOS @ JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
The Jaguars are 0-10 against the spread in their last ten home games. Denver is a better team all around and should win. I’ll be honest, I hate betting on Jacksonville, and its impossible to know what Denver will do after last season.
Broncos 27 Jaguars 17
ATLANTA FALCONS @ PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Good teams tend to step up and play 110 percent when their back-up quarterback is at the helm. Opponents in this situation figure that beating a team who is missing their star quarterback will be easy. As a professional athlete you want to suit up against the best and it is a huge let-down and not nearly as satisfying when you beat back-up players. Pittsburgh MUST salvage a 2-2 record with Roethlisberger gone and this game means to much to the Steelers. Atlanta is playing a non-conference foe, and plays the Cardinals in week two (at home), who have Brady Anderson at quarterback… they could easily rebound with a victory the following Sunday. But Pittsburgh knows the importance of this game.
Steelers 17 Falcons 13
OAKLAND RAIDERS @ TENNESSEE TITANS
Tennessee’s one-dimensional run-heavy offence will prevail over Oakland because the Raiders can’t key on Chris Johnson, or Vince Young will bust nuts all over them with his speed. But unfortunately for Tennessee, it’ll only work against teams as horrible as Oakland.
Titans 23 Raiders 20
CAROLINA PANTHERS @ NEW YORK GIANTS
Last year, Carolina beat up on the Giants 41-9 and New York wants revenge. And no better way than in their new stadium. Hopefully all the distractions won’t put too much pressure on Eli and company (See Dallas last year)
Giants 31 Panthers 17
DETROIT LIONS @ CHICAGO BEARS
Drew Stafford is the real deal but unfortunately, he plays for the Lions… who are not. That being said, laying so many points (line opened at -6.5) on the Bears is insane. Jay Cutler needs to avoid getting sacked and can’t throw interceptions, which shouldn’t be a problem against Detroit.
ARIZONA CARDINALS @ ST. LOUIS RAMS
This year the Rams are on a steep learning curve and unfortunately, they open the season up against a veteran team who knows how to win (against St. Louis). I expect a lot more out of the Rams next season and even bigger things from them in 2012-13.
Cardinals 24 Rams 17
GREEN BAY PACKERS @ PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
By trading away Donovan McNabb, the Eagles proved they are in a rebuilding phase. Yeah, it’s minor, and they will still be good but the Packers will prove why they are SuperBowl contenders, and better than Philadelphia.
Packers 31 Eagles 23
SAN FRANCISCO 49′ERS @ SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
Mike Singletary knows how to win and the 49′ers have only improved under his reign. Pete Carroll is in for a wake-up call.
49ers 27 Seahawks 13
DALLAS COWBOYS @ WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Washington picked up McNabb but the Eagles knew one player doesn’t win the NFC East and the Redskins don’t have whatt it takes. Dallas wins and should cover as road teams have covered the last five times these divisional rivals have met.
Cowboys 24 Redskins 13
BALTIMORE RAVENS @ NEW YORK JETS
I originally picked the Jets to win, but I am changing my prediction. For a bunch of reasons, starting with the fact I just don’t trust the Jets. I think last season they got a little lucky, as even Rex Ryan stated at one point they were out of the playoffs. The whole HBO ‘Hard Knocks’ TV series has been a distraction, Revis holding out and missing camp was a distraction. The Giants can handle the pressure of opening the new stadium against Carolina, but I just can’t see the Jets winning against the Ravens.
Ravens 13 Jets 10
SAN DIEGO CHARGERS @ KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
The Chargers open up the season during the late game on Monday Night Football and will ultimately, thump the Chiefs. But I am looking forward to seeing Cory Greenwood do his thing in the NFL.
Congrats Bro. Keep it up.
Chargers 31 Chiefs 17
