There’s a lot more than meets the eye with Jessica Ashley, a 24-year-old Detroit native who is June’s Playboy Playmate of the Month 2014. In addition to her classic good-looks, she’s also a zealous activist, as well as a University of Michigan grad with a degree in English – Which made her interview an absolute pleasure to read! Standing at 5’9, with a 32D-25-36 figure, added to the fact she is both a scholar and an activist, Jessica Ashley is, in essence, the girlfriend you’ll dream about, but never have. We’ll be keeping an eye out for her next spread, AND her next scholarly contributions! Jessica Ashley is the ultimate triple threat!
Who are you? Jessica Ashley. I’m from Michigan and still live there, although I travel a LOT and have done so for the past few years, leaving for months at a time, but always coming back too.
Which 5 words best describe you? Curious, aware, open, confident, and maybe quixotic.
Where and what did you study in school? I graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I studied a wide array of subjects, but mostly humanities subjects. My bachelor’s degree is in English, and I plan on earning a master’s in another field soon, because yes, I really enjoy learning and academia. I always have.
When and how did you get into modeling? I began modeling when I was finishing college. At first it was just for fun, because I liked to see how someone else would apply their vision to me as a subject, but I am 5’9″ and have a versatile look, so I quickly found agencies that were interested in me and it became a career path.
How did it feel to learn you were going to be Playboy’s Miss June 2014? I was thrilled when I was confirmed as a Playmate. It’s an honor and incredible exposure. Your Twitter profile states that you’re an activist. Can you tell us more about that? I’ve been involved with a number of organizations and have always found it very rewarding to help better the world in whatever small ways I can. I’m currently embarking on a project, as creative director, that will involve interviewing and photographing women from all over the world who are beautiful inside and out. I’m hoping to use the finished product to raise money for CARE (care.org) as well as awareness for women’s rights and against discrimination/racism. Hopefully it will also inspire any girls and women who see it to recognize the importance of recognizing and nurturing their own beauty, being the best they can be, and going after their dreams.
As a self-proclaimed food lover, what are the staples of your diet? What is your guilty pleasure? My diet staples are healthy things, like avocado, vegetables with hummus, fruit smoothies, almonds, and eggs. I eat chocolate and pizza once in a while too. I’m not sure if I should feel guilty about that, but I don’t…
What separated your Playboy shoot from other shoots you’ve done in the past? Well, it’s Playboy. It’s nude, and meant for men’s entertainment. I had a ton of fun shooting my centerfold photos, but it was a new kind of modeling for me, so although I love being in front of cameras, I was nervous.
What’s the worst or funniest way a guy has tried to pick you up? I get all kinds of strange offers, but honestly they aren’t memorable for me. They’re frequently bad haha What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to get a guy’s attention? Do models usually have to do crazy things to get attention from guys? Lol. I can’t really think of anything.
What inspires you? I find inspiration everywhere. People, nature, art. I have the luxury of filling my life with beauty, by being open to it.
What has been your favourite personal accomplishment so far? I was really happy when the swimsuit calendar I put out last year sold so well. It was a risk for me, but it paid off and helped me get taken more seriously, both as a model and as an entrepreneur with my own brand.
If we pressed play on your playlist what would we hear? I listen to different things depending on the day, and the situation. For working out, my playlist is based around Avicii sounds. But I also like Iron & Wine, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, classical, and country music. I’m all over the place with music tastes.
If you took me out for a day in your city what would we do? In Michigan, my favorite restaurant is Bistro 82 in Royal Oak. When I’m in town I eat there at least a couple of times a week. I go for the Cobia, goat cheese salad, and yogurt panna cotta most often. Upstairs from Bistro 82 is a bar, Sabrage, for champagne and cocktails. What’s the nerdiest thing about you? I’m really into philosophical questions, questions that probe at the true nature of reality. That’s led to an interest in theoretical physics and quantum mechanics, which I suppose could be called nerdy.
What was the last thing you laughed out loud at? A TV commercial for 22 Jump Street!
What would the title of your autobiography be? I wouldn’t write an autobiography, but I have authored many short stories, essays, and poems. Now I am working on a novel. Titles come last for me though.
What do you have planned for the future? More modeling, traveling, writing, and experiencing as much of this crazy world as I’m able to.
