In this edition of the Monday Morning Mistress series, we are featuring Toronto Argonauts cheerleader Nicole! Not only is she incredibly talented at dance and acrobatics, but she is also working towards earning her PhD in the field of criminology.
Thanks to her academic pursuits, her wildly positive outlook on life, and a great fitness regimen, Nicole really stands out from the herd. When she is not cheering she’s hanging out with her dog, Hendrix, or saving the world, one child at a time.
Get to know more about Nicole in our interview below!
Who are you?
My name is Nicole and I am twenty-four years old. I’m Czechoslovakian, French and British, and I have lived in Oshawa, On my entire life, but I plan on moving out of Oshawa in the near future.
Which 5 words best describe you?
The five words that I think best describe me are outgoing, ambitious, caring, energetic, and adventurous.
Where and what did you study in school?
I completed my Child and Youth Worker (CYW) Advanced Diploma at Durham College in 2012. I am currently going into my third year of my Criminology and Justice Degree, specializing in Youth, Crime and Justice at UOIT. I absolutely loved the process of obtaining my CYW Advanced Diploma, and developed a very strong passion for working with children and youth throughout that time. This is why I chose to continue my education in the same field.
How did you start cheering for the Argonauts?
I started cheerleading for the Toronto Argonauts in 2013, and this is my second season with the team! I decided to try out for the Toronto Argonauts Cheerleading team after a friend of mine sparked my interest by telling me about her amazing experiences.
We heard you were once a member of the Raptors Dance Pack! How would you compare the experience of being on each team?
Being a member of the Toronto Raptors Dance Pack and the Toronto Argonauts Cheerleading Team have both been amazing experiences. Of course they do have their differences, like performing on a basketball court compared to performing on a massive field with turf. However, both have provided me the opportunity to perform in front of thousands of people and accomplish one of my life goals- becoming a professional dancer.
I am equally grateful for the experiences both teams have provided me despite their differences.
What do you do outside of cheering?
Outside of cheering I keep myself very busy while trying to maintain a balanced lifestyle. I am currently attending school full time, and I am employed within my field of study. I also do promotional, modelling and dance work, as well as make an effort to make time for friends, family and of course my dog Hendrix, because they are all very important to me.
I also love travelling and going away when I have some time off. You only live once, so I live my life to the fullest!
What is one of the most prevalent misconceptions about cheering?
I think one of the most prevalent misconceptions about cheering is that it is not a sport, and does not take as much athleticism as other sports. We work VERY hard and we are all very athletic individuals.
If you could fill a swimming pool with any substance in the world and swim in it, what would it be?
In all honestly, cucumber lemon water! It has to be one of my favorite things on this planet! It is delicious, keeps you hydrated ,and it’s great for your body!
What’s the nerdiest thing about you?
Back to school shopping and getting organized for the school year is something I love to do!
If you could have starred in any movie, which one would it be?
Dirty Dancing! It has been one of my favorite movies since I can remember. It has a great story line and involves lots of dancing!
What 3 things annoy you the most?
- People that judge others without knowing them.
- Car trouble. I hate taking my car to the mechanic!
What songs do you sing to yourself in the shower?
Any Beyonce song.
How do you keep your stunning figure?
I attend cheer practice twice a week, as well as go to the gym three times a week. I also make a significant effort to eat healthy, and pack my lunches/dinners for school and work. I consume large amounts of water on a daily basis (especially leading up to game day). However, I do treat myself sometimes!
Who has been your biggest supporter since you started cheering?
My biggest supporter since I have started cheering would either have to be my best friend Becca or my coach Jorie. Becca is my #1 fan. She is always there to support me and extremely excited for every opportunity that comes my way.
My coach Jorie has been supportive of me not only in cheering, but in my personal life. Jorie continues to push me to be the best person I can be, both inside and outside of cheering.
What is your personal philosophy?
Beast Mode, ON!
What was the last thing you laughed out loud at?
The last thing that I laughed out loud at was a clip from Americas Funniest Home Videos. The clip was of a young girl that was very upset, because she didn’t want her baby brother to grow up, as he was “too cute” and wanted him to stay the size he was forever.
America’s Funniest Home Video always cheers me up and gives me a good laugh!
What would the title of your autobiography be?
Beast Mode, ON!
What do you have planned for the future?
Within the next year I plan on purchasing a house. Once I graduate from University, I plan on working in my field while slowly working towards my PhD.
I am planning to stay on the Argos Cheerleading team as long as possible, but I know that once I “hang up my poms” I will always be involved in the organization in some way, shape or form.
Any memorable quote or final words for your fans and the readers of Lion’s Den U?
“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
I truly believe that life is about being happy. Love life, love the people you surround yourself with, and love your job, as well as the activities you do on a daily basis. You are not rich unless you are happy… something that money can’t buy!
