Hey, good article but I think you are going to hard on Kanye West. I'm not defending his actions or his lifestyle but what I'm saying is College Dropout was one of the best albums of all time. Just cause he isnt rapping about banging or fucking woman doesn't mean it isn't hip hop. U need to focus less on the lifestyle they live and more on what they rap. Who else had people singin in the club "jesus walks". it was legendary. I wont defend Kanye's music after college dropout, but that masterpiece deserves its respect.
But yah nas rules the world baby.

p.s. For some good rap thats a little closer to home, check out SUAVETHERAPPER. He`s a UWO Alum, and just released "The Rising Sun" which is a very tight mix. Enjoy.

Couple of things. One, thank you for having the guts to chirp Jay-Z, because it seems no matter how obviously watered down his music gets, so long as his name is on it, the uneducated 'Hip Hop' fans keep saying, "O he is taking hip hop in a new direction", and then it’s all the sudden okay to put out self indulgent , cookie cutter rhymes (if that’s what you call them... they often don’t even rhyme at all without the ridiculous accents he puts on them). So thanks for that.

Two, I don’t think hip hop is dead. I think it’s alive and well. But you can’t look to simple minded, fly by nights, in a word, mainstream listeners, to guide you there. You will have to find that on your own in the underground - where it came from. Very sick MC`s like Vakill, Jakki da Motamouth and Yak Ballz (to name just a few of my favourites) still exist and still kill rap the way it was meant to be killed. They rock the hardest, wittiest, and often enlightening lyrics so that people can’t get away with just saying "ya, but listen to how good the beat sounds!", and they bring with them the die hard, hood mentality and all the proud beefing that comes with it. Just look at the Copywrite and the Weathermen beef of 05.

The beauty of hip hop now, as it was when it started, is you have to find it. And as a few music elitists know, that makes it all the more rewarding. Like you said, when hip hop was at its greatest, it didn’t have all the bling and hoes. It was fighting to exist and be recognized. And it still is fighting that same grassroots fight in the same streets it was born it. Keep looking. And make sure you let me know when you find some.
