Interview with April

Who are you?

I’m April Deweese, I grew up and lived in central Illinois until I was 30 years old.  I moved to Las Vegas in 2006 for a Fitness Specialist position here.

What 5 words best describe you?

Focused, hardworking, dedicated, independent and kind, but I say what’s on my mind.

Where and what did you study?

I studied Exercise Science with Biology. I have a 2 year Associates degree from Lincoln land community college Springfield, IL and 4 year Bachelors degree from Illinois college, Jacksonville IL.

Not just a pretty face! What do you like most about living in Vegas?

My friends, the weather, being close to Cali, and the opportunities for whatever you wish to do.

How and when did you become so interested in fitness?

I’ve always been interested in fitness since a very young age, when I first saw a bodybuilding competition on TV.  I never had much opportunity for sport or fitness until later when I was in my 20s.

Are you motivated by personal goals or competition?

I’m definitely motivated by pushing myself to reach my own personal goals.

2011 was a huge year for you having won Muscle Contest, Greater Gulf and Pittsburgh Masters Nationals. Can you describe the feeling before your name is called?

It’s always super exciting to hear you’re in first place, and it’s a great feeling of accomplishment.

April Deweese 6

As a mother, how were you able to get your figure back post baby, while focusing on raising a child?

You just have to make health and fitness a priority in your life, not only for yourself, but for setting a good example for the child as well.

A huge passion of yours is working booths for events like the Arnold Classic and Olympia Body Building shows. Why do you like it so much, and how long will you continue to do that?

I always love meeting new people within the fitness industry, and I will probably continue as long as fitness companies ask me to work for them :)

Having been featured by Oxygen magazine, American Curves, and Muscular Development as well as other publications. Do any stand out as most memorable, and do you have any magazines or website on your bucket list?

Modeling for Oxygen magazine was defiantly at the tip top of my bucket list and I hope I can continue to shoot with them whenever possible.  I’m up for any fitness magazines though!

How strict is your diet? What does it consist of?

In the off season it’s not as strict…I usually have a couple cheat meals throughout the week.  But my fridge is always stocked with lean proteins, complex carbs, healthy fats, green veggies, and some fruits.

What is your workout schedule like?

I make sure to train each body part once or twice a week.

What’s something you’ve had to sacrifice in order to keep such a great figure?

I say no a lot to different events. If I’m not going to get the food or rest I need.

What changes have you noticed in the industry since you got involved? Do you feel they’ve been mainly positive or negative?

The fitness industry has changed a lot over the last 11 years.  I think all the new categories is a great thing.  It gets so many more people involved and interested.

April Deweese 3

Do you think the fitness industry relies too much on sex appeal?

Some magazines rely on sex appeal, but for the most part I believe it is classy, athletic and conservative.

Do you have any sponsors?

Not at this time.

How have Pride Nutrition, Premier Nutrition, Strengthpro, SSP, Labrada, Eggwhites International, and Gymgems helped take you to the next level?

Working with these companies throughout the years has given me the opportunity to meet people within the fitness industry that otherwise I might not have been able to meet.

Outside of Fitness and modeling, what do you do in your spare time for fun?

I love going to dinner and movies, spending time with my son, baseball games, the beach, and just relaxing on my sofa with the TV remote.

If someone wanted to reach out to you for a nutritional consultation or Personal training, what would be the best way to contact you?

My e-mail is the best way to contact me:

What are your plans moving forward?

To continue helping my clients reach their goals and for me to continue reaching mine!

Can you leave readers with a quote, saying or something inspirational?

“Fat is like a moving object, if you don’t do something to stop it, it’ll just keep going.”

Thanks April!
