Dear UWO USC, Your Website Contest is Erroneous

Hey LDU,

Today this contest launched [Ed. (Jan 18/10)], insulting our entire faculty. This is what we do as a profession, and they’ve turned into a contest? Not to mention the fact that the stake of the university’s image is up for grabs? For little to no compensation?

A gift basket and a recommendation isn’t worth the 30+ hours worth of work that goes into properly developing and designing a site. Ultimately it attracts and leaves the site in the hands of inexperienced designers.

A properly developed site for an organization of this stature needs a proper creative brief, time-line and critical path. There are next to no guidelines provided by the USC, in addition to mention of branding or logo-usage rights.

This is a 28 million dollar corporation. I know that they’re not doing well financially right now, but that’s no excuse to belittle the design and multimedia industry.

It’s contests like this that cause me to question the financial and corporate responsibility of the USC. A decision like this is only going to waste time and money, as they end up right back at square one, redesigning the site next year.

Ultimately, you either do it right the first time, or you don’t do it all.
