We all have a first time. Whether it’s the first time you rode a bike, the first time you got an acceptance letter to university, or the first time you had sex. It’s a memorable moment in our lives. Everyone remembers their first time.
So what is The First Time? It’s a blog where you can, well, share your first times. Pretty neat idea, eh?
It’s the brain child of Arthur Sousa and Michael Grant, that was launched on March 29th, 2013. Why you ask? In their words- “To encourage the sharing of truthful first time experiences in the hopes of inspiring others.”
We were able to get the low-down on the blog with its creators, so check it out and submit your first time. They ask that you only follow one rule:
Our guiding message: Your story doesn’t need to be epic, but it does need to be true.
What was your inspiration for The First Time?
We used to work together at an agency a year ago, and when we worked together we just found that we made a great team, and since leaving we had been searching for a project to do together. We knew we wanted to do something together that was bigger than just a website, an idea that we felt could appeal to people across different age groups, nationalities, and interests. We thought what’s something that everyone experiences? And what we came up with was The First Time.
Who is involved in the project? How much work was it?
Arthur Sousa and Michael Grant are the co-founders of the project. It was a lot of work to refine the design, the idea, and message. We wanted it to be open and honest while still being a bit raw, and we think we’ve achieved that. We put the project together over the course of about two weeks of long nights after we’d finished our regular nine-to-fives.
How exactly does it work?
It’s pretty simple. You share your first time experience with us, and after a brief review process we publish your story.
Can you anonymously submit to the site?
Yes. We’ve had a few people submit anonymously for one reason or another.
Is there any filter? How dirty can things get on there? What type of moderation is there?
We’re the filter. There’s no real rules about posting, other than the story needs to be true. However, we’re ultimately looking for stories that are of a safe-for-work nature. If the topic is a bit racy that’s OK, providing it’s written in a respectful manner. We’re not looking to create a site about sex stories.
Do you think people are going to take advantage of anonymity, and make up false stories?
They might. We encourage people to be honest, which is why we allow them to post anonymously. If someone gains some personal value from making up a story, and a reader gains some value from reading it… well then I guess there’s no harm in that. However, the point of the project is to be truthful and honest.
Our edict is: “It doesn’t need to be epic, it just needs to be true.”
What are you trying to achieve with The First Time? Short-term goals? Long-term goals?
That’s a bit of a moving target really. Originally our goal was just to create a place that might inspire readers to try something for the first time. However since it’s launched we’ve received a ton of feedback from people who’ve shared, that have told us the whole process was cathartic for them, and that after writing and sharing they felt a huge sense of release in the act of getting their story off their chest. That’s something that we never really considered originally—that the process could be kind of cleansing. It brings a completely different angle to the project, one which we find fascinating.
So we’ve reached our original short-term goal. Looking into the future we love the fact that The First Time is evolving at its own pace. Since we launched we’ve been viewed in 65 countries around the world, which, to us, is absolutely mind boggling. We’ve had people from as far away as India send us a message to say thanks and give a thumbs up. Everyone has been really great. We guess our long term goals are to continue to provide a place for people to share their first time stories and give inspiration to readers. How will The First Time evolve next? We aren’t really sure. We’ll just keep chugging along and enjoying the experience.
Could this website be the light at the end of the tunnel? A hope for some humanity? I sure hope so.
You can visit the first time at TheFirstTi.me, and we encourage you to help out their project by submitting your first time.
