If you haven’t been to Shmokey Rob n’ Sons then you simply have to go. I’ve passed this place for the past 5 years without even thinking about going in, because of their sketchy sign on Oxford St claiming “Best pulled pork in town” always turned me off… as if that place is gonna have the best pulled pork.
Well, last Friday I got a text from a random number telling me that I had to go, and if that isn’t a sign, then I don’t know what is.
Shmokey Rob N Sons is a hole in the wall. Located in the plaza on the corner of Oxford and Wonderland, the small restaurant boasts character, flavour, and good food, despite the bleak decor. I asked the cashier for a pulled pork, and he replied “coleslaw and hot sauce?” – “yes” – “right answer.” That’s when I knew this was the real thing.
I sat down, and my sandwich arrived hot and mountainous within 5 minutes. The pork was piled high, and the heat of the meat fused the slaw together to create a unbelievable flavour. The meat is smoked for 20 hours, I’m told, and you can taste the difference. Although fully cooked, the meat falls apart in your sandwich, because it is so tender. The flavour of smoked wood, mixed with an unbelievable homemade BBQ sauce, topped with the perfect amount of hot sauce, makinf this sandwich stand out among the rest. Not to mention the perfectly toasted bun, which is my favourite part of a sandwich.
I had both the pulled pork and the beef brisket (above), and they are high end sandwiches. If you like pulled pork, BBQ, or just good tasting food, put Shmokey Rob n Sons on your list of places to go.
The best part about this place is that they don’t do any advertising. It’s all word of mouth. So check it out, and pass it along.
