I’m not going to do anything rash, like compare my new favourite English street artist, Mobstr, to the legendary Banksy, but I do have to say that I haven’t been this excited to see wall art such as this for a long time. One cannot ignore the fact that both artists use public wall drawings to convey messages of social commentary, but there’s a degree of light-hearted-cynicism underlying some of Mobstr’s work that a sarcastic asshole like myself is just naturally drawn to.
Some of Mobstr‘s work are in protest of England’s excessive surveillance practices; some are in protest of anti-graffiti policies; and others still are just simply the sarcastic musings of what is likely a bored artist, seeking a canvas worthy of their fleeting genius. Either way, I’m sure you’ll enjoy many of these.
I’ve collected 40 of my favourites, and you can stay updated by checking in at Mobstr’s official website. On the site you’ll also find Mobstr’s “manifesto”, which will give you a better idea of what makes this artist tick. For even more info, read this interview Mobstr did with Public Ad Campaign, about a joint project with the Newcastle City Council, and how they feel about public spaces and artistic expression.
